In order to measure the progress made by each municipality in its revitalization and sustainable development strategy, and how it was made, the Rues principales Foundation prepares summaries of the work done in each area.

These summaries testify to the scope of the Rues principales strategy in all the components of local development.

Gaspé – Socio-economic revitalization summary

Population : 14 958 inhabitants

Gaspé grew with the sea, becoming the largest port in Eastern Canada until 1944. This expansion, driven in large part by the fisheries, experienced a number of serious slowdowns during the 20th century. Gaspé thus began to exploit new natural and economic resources, whether wood or, increasingly, tourism. Its changing economy brought with it challenges and new problems; however, the local actors took action to respond to the situation.
